Asia ex-Japan equities were viewed as an attractive alternative to Western markets as the extent of the credit crunch began to reveal itself. They have since been weak but the drivers for growth remain in place.
A decade after the Asian financial crisis, Western stockmarkets have been shaken by their own credit-fuelled fears of recession. The Asian crisis, which began in July 1997, led to fears of global contagion and resulted in the International Monetary Fund providing a series of rescue packages for Asian countries.
