Jones Day hires five new lawyers in Shanghai

Increasing opportunities lead to law firm increasing presence in PRC.

The international law firm Jones Day Reavis & Pogue has announced the hire of five new associates for its Shanghai office. According to the firm, the additions underscore Jones Day's commitment to the continued change and growth in China's commercial sector and are in tandem with the PRC's entry into the World Trade Organization.

The hires include four Chinese-born lawyers trained and qualified in US, UK, or Hong Kong SAR law, and an US-born and qualified senior associate. Together, the associates bring US and regional experience from law firms such as Clifford Chance, Perkins Coie and Denton Wilde Sapte.

Senior associate Beth Bunnell, formerly of Denton Wilde Sapte's Beijing office, has experience in PRC energy, M&A and FDI transactions, while Sharon Chen, who was trained and qualified in both China and the Hong Kong SAR, brings proficiency in PRC dispute resolution and commercial practice.

Cheng Wang, who joins Jones Day from Sidley Austin Brown & Wood, specializes in securitization and financial transactions, and associate Liang Kan, who trained with Perkins Coie in Seattle, will deal with the corporate and commercial side of the business.

The final addition is Jin Ding, who joins the firm's China project finance team, a role he formerly held with Clifford Chance.

"The high level of client service in China is best reflected by our new hires," comments senior partner Winston Zhao. "China is the fastest growing market in Asia, and the depth of the local and international experience our associates bring is proof of our commitment to remain standard bearers of professionalism in this dynamic business climate."

The new hires bring the office total to nearly 30 legal professionals.
