HSBC gets Julius

One of Asia''s great investment banking characters is to join HSBC as global head.

The manager of the Captain's Bar in Hong Kong will be delighted. One of the greatest patrons of his lunchtime sushi buffet is about to be spending a lot more time in Asia.

That's because former Jardine Fleming equities boss, Russell Julius is about to join HSBC as its global head of ECM. And given that most of HSBC's ECM mandates look likely to come from Greater China, he reckons he will be spending a lot more time in Hong Kong.

His decision to revitalise HSBC's none-too-vibrant equity capital markets effort suggests that he has put on hold his lifelong ambition to settle down and become the bursar of an Oxford college (which is probably the only career even more lucrative than investment banking if you believe what the papers are saying about the bribes being levied at Pembroke to admit students).

He joins from ING, and will start work in the early Summer. He will be based in London.
